Riga, the Capital of Latvia, is rich in architecture, culture and a plentiful array of attractions. Riga is by far one of the most amazing capital cities in Europe and well worth visiting.
The capital city is home to around 700,000 inhabitants making it a very pleasant sized city to spend time in. Riga was created around 800 years ago, so it is a fairly new city but that in no way reduces the huge amount of history one will find. Riga is a charming place to begin your trip to Latvia, with all of the things you would expect from a modern capital city, great food, live music, performances, the opera, theatrical events, great art nouveau architecture, wild nightlife, shopping and a rich history. It has a huge amount of museums that will help you to get to know some of the local culture and history.
Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) architecture prevailed in Europe of 1880s-1910s. It was an antithesis to other styles that merely copied the past. Instead of re-using old columns and Antiquity-inspired sculptures, art nouveau used elements such as curved lines, geometric patterns, images of plants and images from local mythology to create extremely elaborate yet still modern (for that time) facades.
There is no other city in Europe which can compare to Riga in terms of the number of Art Nouveau buildings. In Riga, more than one-third of the buildings in the city center are Art Nouveau in style. In terms of the compact nature of these treasures and off the great artistic quality of the buildings that can be seen, Riga is a true Art Nouveau metropolis. Riga is usually considered an unparalleled gem of art nouveau.
The pearl of Art Nouveau in Riga is Alberta Street and its surrounding streets (Vilandes, Elizabetes, Strelnieku and Antonijas street). Here the visitors will see the most brilliant aspects of the decorative style which Art Nouveau was. The elaborate facades of these buildings are favorites for tourists to snap images of and there is even an Art Nouveau museum.
(Cost of excursion depends on the people quantity, for two people it will cost 55 EUR per person).
For dinner we recommend the Riviera restaurant. It is also located in Art Nouveau district. Restaurant Riviera is created according to the best traditions of Meditarranean cuisine. This is very special place, designed in peaceful colors with stone mosaics and southern ornaments on the walls.
The menu combines Italian, Spanish, French and Greek culinary tastes, which are complemented by specially exquisite Mediterranean region wine card.
Day 2 / 15.11. Buffet breakfast in the hotel restaurant.

Who was Marta? Why Marta’s Ball? Marta Helena Skowrońska, later known as Marta Samuilovna Skavronskaya was the second wife of Peter the Great and first Empress of Russia from 1725 until her death.
Her life story is a story about Latvian Cinderella. The future Empress of Russia lived in Marienburg – the present-day Alūksne in Latvia, near the border with Estonia and Russia.
She met Peter the Great in 1703 and in 1705 she converted to Orthodoxy and took the new name of Catherine Alexeyevna (Yekaterina Alexeyevna)
Catherine was the first woman to rule Imperial Russia, opening the legal path for a century almost entirely dominated by women, including her daughter Elizabeth and granddaughter-in-law Catherine the Great, all of whom continued Peter the Great’s policies in modernizing Russia.
